The Solar Nebula
The nebular hypothesis is the current basis of all theories of planet formation. It simply states that all planets form in disks made of gas and dust. Although the modern variant of this theory is more well-defines, this idea was first put forward Kant in 1755, and later modified by Laplace in 1796.
